The seven-week Summer Bridge Program is designed to familiarize you with the academic expectations and cultural knowledge necessary to succeed in graduate departments at Florida State University.
Our goal is for you to begin your graduate studies with confidence. We feel strongly that participation in the program gives a competitive advantage to new international graduate students.
The program includes:
- English preparation for academic purposes
- Language and culture appropriate to American universities
- Personal consultant for advice
- Cultural excursions and local trips
- SPEAK Exam for international teaching assistants
- Academic Writing
- Presentation Skills
- American Classroom Culture
Note: Upon acceptance, CIES will issue you an I-20 for the Summer Bridge Program. You must use the CIES I-20 to apply for your F-1 student visa. After you finish the program, your SEVIS record will be transferred to the main campus of Florida State University, and FSU’s Center for Global Engagement will issue an I-20 for your degree program using the same SEVIS record. You will not need to get a new visa or leave the U.S. as part of this process.

"Since English is my second language I was afraid of being a graduate student at FSU. With the Summer Bridge program, I could reduce my fear from a new environment and now have settled into FSU very well. This class taught me how to participate actively in the class under American culture and how to communicate with professors respectfully... I received above 3.9 GPA in my first semester, and now I'm pretty confident of my future success. I definitely recommend the Summer Bridge program to newly admitted students from other countries like me."
