The Intensive Writing Course focuses on improving your writing in both professional and academic settings. We focus on developing the skills you need to create and write an academic paper or professional report, write an engaging email that is clear and succinct, or send a clear and compelling text message.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Write academic papers using simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
  • Write paragraphs
  • that are fully developed (approximately 8 – 10 sentences in length).
  • that are coherent.
  • that use a variety of sentence structures in the same paragraph.
  • that includes a topic sentence and supporting details.
  • Write essays
  • based on personal experience
  • using the rhetorical style of illustration (primary focus in Session A)
  • using the rhetorical style of persuasive (primary focus in Session B)
  • following the Writing Process (brainstorming, writing, revising) with little guidance from the instructor.
  • that is planned by organizing the ideas in an outline format.
  • that is revised based on self-correction and comments made by the instructor.
  • with a thesis statement, topic sentences and supporting details (following the outline).
  • that has unity, progression and a connection of ideas.
  • that has a range of vocabulary and appropriate word choice.
